Etiquette for the Yoga Studio
Shanti Yoga is a dedicated space for healing, study, and practice of yoga. The studio is a special place totally devoted to our students and their wellbeing. If you are new to the studio, please make arrangements to speak with me prior to your first class.
1. Be considerate of the purpose of this space and understand we a continuance of an ancient tradition that spans over four millennia.
2. Please remove shoes at the entrance of the studio and place them outside the door: this is a time honored tradition observed when entering these spaces.
3. Always honor others’ space and avoid stepping on or over others’ mats.
4. Be mindful of your posture and not allow the bottoms of your feet face another, unless in asana.
5. Cell phones should be turned off during class and preferably left in your car.
6. Put all props back in place and leave the space as you found it.
7. Wear comfortable clothing. Yoga is practiced with bare feet.
8. Honor your body and be aware of your changing limitations and strengths. There is no element of completion in the practice of yoga. Your attention is focused inward on your journey of self-discovery.
9. Inform me before class of pregnancy, injuries, recent surgeries, neck or disc challenges, diseases, retinal/glaucoma challenges, blood pressure challenges. This is the only way for the instructor to know how to adjust you and give modifications.
10. During menstrual cycles, inversions are not recommended.
11. Practice on an empty stomach. A full stomach is a hindrance to breath and practice; refrain from eating a heavy meal 2-3 hours before class time.
12. Enter fresh and clean: please avoid distracting perfume and cologne.
13. Bring a towel and water to class. Hydration is very important: drink plenty of room temperature water, especially after class.
14. Always enter each class as if it is your first class with an open mind and heart.
15. Enjoy yourself and practice regularly to receive the full benefits of yoga.
