Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is the most popular branch of Yoga explored in the West. Hatha means "force" and represents the union of two words - ha, "sun," and tha, "moon." Hatha Yoga enables us to achieve a strong, flexible, youthful body and a calm, focused mind by utilizing rhythmic breathing, proper body alignment, and isometrically challenging but relaxing asanas (physical poses).
Integrative Yoga
Integrative Yoga, as offered at Shanti Yoga Studio, is a unique synthesis of the many branches of Yoga. It is a comprehensive and intellectual path to the harmonious development of every aspect of the individual.
The purpose of this class is to explore the deeper dimensions of Yoga’s rich heritage and timeless philosophies to impassion and enable us to live harmoniously as members of one universal family and embrace a lifestyle filled with Supreme Peace and Joy.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is "active relaxation." The body is supported with props, while we alternately stimulate and relax the body to move toward balance. Some Asanas have an overall benefit, while others target an individual part, such as the lungs or heart. All create specific physiological responses which are beneficial to health and can reduce the effects of stress-related disease. Restorative yoga is a wonderful way to pamper yourself and escape from daily stress, while healing and nurturing the body.
Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is a deeply meditative practice of holding postures for an extended period of time, targeting connective tissue—specifically ligaments and tendons in the joints and spine. The practice of Yin Yoga lengthens these tissues, increasing range of motion—while stimulating the flow of energy through the body’s meridians. To highlight the role that connective tissue plays in determining range of motion, muscles account for about forty percent of the resistance against the body's flexibility, while connective tissue accounts for about fifty percent.
Dhyana (Meditation)
While there are many different methods of meditation, the end goal of all types of meditation lead to a mind that is quieted and free from stress by the use of quiet contemplation and reflection.
Meditation can bring about healing of both the body and the mind by using deliberation of thought and consideration. There are various physical benefits that can be experienced when meditation is made to be a part of daily life. Some physical benefits of meditation include a decrease in blood pressure and an improvement in breathing due to the increase of air flow that gets to the lungs. Those who use meditation regularly also find that their resting heart rate is lower as well, which takes some of the stress off the heart. Chemicals in the body that are associated with stress are lower as well, which leads to less anxiety. Meditation also promotes youthful skin and a youthful appearance.
Meditation is a practice that brings about not only physical benefits, but psychological benefits as well. Bringing oneself to a state of reflection through meditation has amazing effects on the mind. Relaxation and a decrease in stress are rather obvious benefits, but many people do not realize that meditation can also improve moods and memory and decrease moodiness and depression.
Samyama
Samyama is the integration of the higher, latter stages of yoga: dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi (enlightenment).
Samyama is the means used to reach the subtler levels of non-attachment. As a practice of discrimination used for deep introspection, it uncovers our true nature and eventually leads us to liberation, which in turn allows us to move beyond limits of our ego.
